Video Game Reel (True Fear 2)

Please pause music before playing the reel.

I began playing piano as a child, variously studying jazz and classical performance and composition. Over the past five years I written music for a wide breadth of films that span documentary, narrative, political, and advertisement as well as several video games. My scores draw from my roots playing and studying jazz and classical piano, my experience writing and producing modern electronic music, and my studies of narrative forms as a writer and composer.

Solo Piano

I perform in Los Angeles and around the country as a solo pianist or with a trio or combo. My pianistic style is informed by training as a jazz pianist as well as explorations into classical and contemporary music as a pianist and composer.

My style and repertoire provide an emotive, refined performance that has enhanced the atmosphere of clubs, restaurants, hotels, and other venues looking to push their live music beyond the norm. For booking and rates please email booking@lyell.co.

Testimonials

"Lyell provided private lessons to my two sons for several years and we were so pleased with their progress. His approach to music stems from extensive training and experience and is very passionate. He took the needed time to help guide my boys to greater understanding of music structure, performance, theory and enjoyment. Lyell is always looking for new ways to approach a learning moment and provided performance opportunities that helped them grow as musicians."  -K. McKormick, mother of two students ages 14 and 11

"Lyell Roeder is a fantastic piano teacher, not only showing me how to play a piece but explaining the musical theory behind it, notably in my chosen area of the blues. I am blind and was especially impressed that, when planning my lessons, Lyell always goes through pieces with his eyes closed to make sure I would have no trouble."  -D. Konkel, age 66

"I can’t say enough great things about Lyell as a piano instructor. He has an incredible depth of knowledge of the piano and was truly inspirational. I had never considered jazz as a focus prior to meeting Lyell and I’m grateful for the introduction and strong foundation Lyell provided. He was also instrumental in teaching how to play with depth and feeling in addition to technical skills. I was fortunate enough to host a recital at our home and met the majority of his other students both young and old and everyone had the same admiration for him and we were very sad to see him move from the east coast."  -J. Reger

"Lyell is the rare combination of being both a talented musician and teacher. He is disciplined, yet makes learning music fun. He thinks creatively about the pieces he assigns and gives you the confidence that you will learn them, and learn them well!"  -E. Rubin
